Optical Mineralogy

This course provides an introduction to the theory and methods of optical crystallography as it relates to the passage of light through isotropic and anisotropic minerals. Laboratory periods emphasize the application of theory to the identification of minerals in thin section using a polarizing microscope. This course includes an introduction to the optical mineralogy of the most important minerals in common igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. PREREQ or COREQ: PHYS 1007. PREREQ: GEOL 2126.
