Laurentian University to welcome its own Pipe Band
Laurentian one of the first Ontario universities to design an official tartan
Sudbury (Ontario) - The Laurentian University Pipe Band and the official university tartan will be formally launched by Laurentian president Dr. Judith Woodsworth during the first spring convocation ceremony at the Fraser Auditorium, on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. For the first time, the university’s very own Pipe Band will lead the procession of graduates and dignitaries.
Laurentian is one of the first universities in Ontario to design its own tartan, after Queen’s. The Laurentian University kilt is designed with the colours of the university’s crest (blue and gold) and incorporates the Ramsay (Scottish spelling) family tartan. Laurentian is also only the third post-secondary institution in Ontario to have its own pipe band, along with Queen’s University and Royal Military College.
The Pipe Band was initiated in September 2006 by third-year music student David Young, with the support of the President’s office, and started rehearsing last December. With 12 active pipers and drummers, the band is comprised of students, faculty and community members who are interested in promoting their Scottish heritage and serving as musical ambassadors for Laurentian University.
Laurentian University will celebrate 2,028 new graduates during the 2007 spring convocation ceremonies. Due to the large number of graduates, a record of nine ceremonies will be held at Laurentian, in the Fraser auditorium, from Tuesday, May 29, 2007, to Saturday, June 2, 2007. All nine ceremonies will be webcast at www.laurentian.ca, enabling relatives, friends and others unable to attend in person to view the ceremonies, wherever they find themselves in the world.
If you would like more information about the Laurentian University Pipe Band or would like to book the band or pipers for an event, please contact Pipe Major Derek Young at (705) 566-2601. Experienced bagpipers or drummers are invited to attend band practices at the Alphonse Raymond Building every Sunday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
