Identification and Student Responsibilities
To ensure appropriate accommodation, students must identify their needs with the Special Needs Office within the first week of classes of each session.
The Special Needs Office requires the appropriate medical documentation to assist students with their disabilities.
All students need to meet with the Special Needs Coordinator in order to arrange for the appropriate accommodations.
Within the first two weeks of each session, students must inform the Special Needs Office of the courses in which they are enrolled.
It is the responsibility of each student to inform the Special Needs Office in the event of any course changes or withdrawals.
It is the student’s responsibility to complete his/her section of the registration form (available at the Special Needs Office) and to have it signed by his/her professor.
It is the student’s responsibility to discuss his/her accommodations with his/her professor(s). The coordinator can intervene if there are any problems.
Test and Mid-term Exam Procedures
Students must make arrangements with the Special Needs Office at least five days before mid-terms and tests.
Note: Failure to meet this deadline may result in our inability to set up the appropriate arrangements.
The Special Needs Office will make the necessary test arrangements and provide the supervision. However, students must obtain, complete and return a designated form available from the Special Needs Office.
Any student arriving late for a test will be penalized by having the equivalent time deducted from his/her available test time.
Once the test is completed, it is immediately sealed in an envelope and locked in a secure place. Both the invigilator and the student will sign the test form. The sealed envelope is returned to the professor or department the following work day.
Final Exam Procedures
Students must make arrangements with the Special Needs Office at least five weeks before final exams.
Note: Failure to meet deadlines may result in the inability to arrange the necessary accommodations.
Students are responsible for obtaining the necessary forms, completing the required sections, and obtaining the signatures from their professors. Completed forms should be returned to the Special Needs Office as soon as possible.
Note: Exam times are set by the university and cannot be altered under any circumstances. In the event that a student cannot write on the scheduled date and time, he/she must apply for a deferred exam through the Office of the Registrar.
For information on the regularly-scheduled final examination times, please refer to the Examination Form in the Special Needs Office.
Only the materials specified by the professor will be permitted in the examination room. No coats, pencil cases, or other personal belongings are allowed in the examination room. However, depending on the nature of the disability, food and fluids may be permitted.
The Special Needs Office will make the necessary arrangements with the professor and the Office of the Registrar.
On the scheduled date and time of the exam, the student and the invigilator will simultaneously read the instructions on the exam.
Once the examination is complete, it is immediately sealed in an envelope and secured in a safe place. The time required to write the exam is documented and recorded on the invigilating form. Both the invigilator and the student will sign the invigilation form. The sealed examination is returned to the professor or department the following day.
