Liberal Science Programme Requirements

Programme Requirements

Bachelor of Science (general) in Liberal Science (3-year)

 

A total of 90 credits are required, of which a minimum of 54 credits must be science courses from at least 3 departments.  This comprises 2 continuations of 18 credits each of BIOL, COSC, CHMI, GEOL, MATH, or PHYS, a minimum of 6 credits of a third science department (from the list above), plus 12 other Science credits. 

 

The programme requires 6 credits from*:

 

ENGR 4117 - Engineering, Technology and Society
HIST 2245 - History of Science
PHIL 2215 - Environmental Ethics
PHIL/RLST 2345 - Bioethics: Human Life Issues
PHIL 2356F - Philosophie de la biologie
PHIL 2505 - Critical Thinking & Argumentation
RLST 3306 - Issues in Religion & Science

 

*Or 6 upper-level credits in Philosophy or related “Science and Society” subject, if these courses are not available. In such a case, you must consult with the coordinator.

 

Finally, 12 credits are required from non-science courses (Arts and Humanities), which may count required language course(s) and the other electives (18 credits) may be taken in any discipline.

 

In order to choose your courses, you must consult with the programme coordinator.

 

Continuations

A continuation is a sequence of 18 credits in one science discipline, which usually comprises 6 credits from the 1st year level, and 12 credits from the upper-year courses.  The following should be considered for the Liberal Science students :

·   Biology: up to 9 credits from selected psychology courses may be taken.  See "Biology".

·   Computer Science: selected courses are required.  See “Computer Science.”

·   Geology: up to 9 credits from selected geography courses may be taken. See  “Geology.”

·   Mathematics: a continuation consists of MATH 1036/7, 1056/7 and 6 credits of upper-year MATH courses.

 

Post-secondary credit transfers

Students who have completed a degree from a community college or other post-secondary institution may be granted credits towards their Liberal Science degree.  The students should consult the Registrar’s office to obtain a Credit Transfer equivalent or a College Transition Program form, and consult the Liberal Science coordinator.
