The Department's overall objective is to provide students with a sound base for applied studies in the fields of urban planning, community development and regional resources assessment.  The expertise of staff members, and modern equipment, allows the student to gain a firm grasp of varied geographical methods of analysis.  Special consideration is given to automated cartography, as well as advanced studies in geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing.  Emphasis is also placed on the assessment and development of Canadian resources.  To this end, the Department is regularly augmenting its remote sensing and map collections as well as its data files dealing with Sudbury and Northern Ontario.

Students need not have taken geography in high school to pursue geography courses at the University level.  In the General B.A. program students are required to take courses which cover two categories: regional courses and systematic/techniques courses.  In the Honors program students are required to take courses covering each of the three categories, i.e. regional, systematic and techniques in both second and third years.  The fourth year provides the opportunity to apply the acquired skills and knowledge to specific geographical problems.
