Newsletter - April-August 2011

Congratulations

As the representative of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution on the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), Dr. Albrecht Schulte-Hostedde was recently elected as the Chair of the Guidelines Committee, and thus becomes a member of the Board of Directors of the CCAC. The CCAC is an autonomous and independent body, created in 1968 to oversee the ethical use of animals in science in Canada.

Eagle Awards 2011

Graduate (M.Sc.) students in BIOL 5056 and students in the Science Communication Graduate Diploma program teamed up in a joint project to produce video lectures as short TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Talk style films. On April 14, a gala event was held at the Vale Living with Lakes Centre to view these films and to present the Eagle Awards.

Nineteen short films under the leadership of Drs John Gunn and David Pearson were presented at the gala. This was the first official function at the centre before its official opening. The films were of a high quallity - entertaining, funny, informative, and thoughtful - and presented impressive skills in editing, directing and storytelling. As a result, the Science Communication students have gained experience as real-life producers, directors and film editors, while the BIOL 5056 students were the clients, young scientists striving to get their ideas produced as a film.

Awards were given in several categories. The winner of the Golden Eagle was "Oxygen; the other silent killer" by Alex Chan and ReelScience Productions.

Biology student selected to participate in 2011 International Seminar

For a 2nd year in a row, a Laurentian University student has been selected as one of 20 Canadian students to participate in the 2011 International Seminar in Vietnam. The theme of this year's seminar is "Youth in the workforce and the socio-economic development of Vietnam."

Katrina Parent, a 4th year Biomedical Biology student, will be paired with 20 Vietnamese students for six-weeks in the Tra Vinh and Binh Thuan provinces of Vietnam to assess the job opportunities in the local communities.

Katrina will be heading to Vietnam from June 15 until July 30, 2011. During this time, her accommodation may range from staying with host families to staying in university residences. While in Vietnam, Katrina will be writing a blog about her adventures.
