Congratulations

Jennifer Babin Fenske (at centre in the photo below), Ph.D. candidate in Boreal Ecology, attended the annual Entomological Society of Canada (ESC) conference (October 19-22) and was awarded with the Entomological Society of Ontario (ESO) travel grant valued at $250. She is shown here receiving the award with fellow recipient Lauren Strachan (on left) from the president of the ESO, Rebeccas Hallett (on right). Jennifer was also the runner-up for the ESC President's Prize for best oral presentation in Ecology with her presentation entitled "Using museum specimens to examine correlations between climate change and rapid morphological change in stream beetles". Collaborating authors of the paper were Yves Alarie (Laurentian University) and Madhur Anand (University of Guelph). (Photo: Eric Rickey)

Theses defended

Congratulations to the following graduate students who successfully defended their theses:

Stacey Hembruff (M.Sc. - September 5) - The role of P-glycoprotein in the acquired drug resistance of MCF-7 cells to doxorubicin and paclitaxel (Supervised by Drs A. Parissenti and K.K. Nkongolo)

Matthew Binks (M.Sc. - September 26) - Post-release behaviour and survival of shelter reared junvenile black bears in central Ontario (Supervised by Drs J. Hamr and F.F. Mallory)

Lisa Marie St Denis (M.Sc. - October 28) - Rapid identification of AMD bacteria through 16sRNA gene sequencing (Supervisd by Drs L.G. Leduc et G.D. Ferroni)

Thank you

The Department extends its sincerest thank you to the following people who took it upon themselves to spruce up the Arboretum Pavilion: Chris Blomme, Lorraine Brosseau, Tom Fenske, Mery Martinez, Diane Mayer, and Nicole Paquette. On October 27 and 28, they cleaned, plastered and painted into what is now a clean, colourful, sunny and bright place for seminars, labs, meetings, and parties.
