Tier II Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology

Laurentian University invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology as a research team leader in the new Vale Living with Lakes Centre. The focus of this environmental institute is to advance both basic and applied science to assist in the protection and management of northern aquatic systems, with an emphasis on Boreal and Sub-Arctic areas affected by rapid industrial development (especially mining) and climate change. The fields of specialization for this CRC include - studies of microbial communities and their role in adaptation and recovery of aquatic ecosystems from severe land use and climate change disturbance, understanding key biochemical processes and effects on ecosystem function (e.g. organic matter decomposition, nutrient transport, contaminant detoxification) as well as the development of innovative approaches to bioremediation of industrial effluents (mining effluents in particular). The purpose of the Chair is to advance the position of Laurentian University as a centre of excellence in research and teaching in Aquatic Environmental Science.

We seek an innovative individual with an outstanding record of research and publication, who will provide leadership for national and international collaborative research and become a focus for integration of research initiatives involving the Vale Living with Lakes Centre, the School of Mining, various University Departments, and the mining industry. The Chair will be expected to contribute to our BSc, MSc, and PhD programs and assist in our objective to become one of the leading centres for the protection and management of northern aquatic ecosystems in the world. The CRC Program was created by the Government of Canada to cultivate world-class research and development.  Canada Research Chairs are funded by the Canadian government (www.chairs.gc.ca) and are designed for exceptional emerging researchers. The position is contingent on the successful candidate being approved by the Canada Research Program.

This positions is tenure-track.  The Canada Research Chair is a five year appointment.
